Big up to Burton!

Perhaps more appropriate in the Tim Burton thread but anyway -

Venice honours director Burton

Director Tim Burton, whose films include Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow, has been honoured with a career award at the Venice Film Festival.

Festival organisers called Burton "one of America's bravest, most visionary and innovative film-makers".
Burton received the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award from his long-time collaborator, actor Johnny Depp, in a red carpet event.

Festival organisers dubbed Wednesday "Tim Burton Day" in his honour.

"I'm very honoured," said Burton, 49. "It means a lot to me. Hopefully it just inspires me to keep going."

He joked that the award was better than an Oscar, saying: "It's actually a lot more beautiful-looking thing than a bald, naked man."

He told Reuters: "You grow up in Hollywood and that whole scenario and what you feel here is that there is just passion about movies. So that's what makes it special to me - it's not about business, it's not about finance, it's about just the love of movies."

After the prize ceremony, Burton's 1993 stop-motion animation A Nightmare Before Christmas was shown at the event.

I'm very glad he got this recognition. I think I've enjoyed every movie he's had a hand in, except that Planet of the Apes remake...

Planet of the Apes was very uninteresting. =/

But he made up for that one bad movie with all his other ones. ^^

So glad that he got recognized. He deserves it, especially since out of all directors I've seen he puts forth the most effort and passion into it. He truly knows how to make something interesting and how to tell a story through his scripts and his visuals.

At least he has only had one bad movie, that's more than can be said about a lot of directors nowadays.

Gah. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I'd suppose.

I am personally an avid fan of his work. Vincent being my favourite along with Scissorhands. Though I sincerly hope Sweeny Todd shall be as good as it seems. I wonder if Depp can sing...Hmhh..

Sweeny Todd? Like T.S. Eliot's Sweeny Todd? With Johnny Depp? Why haven't I heard of this before?!

Apparently he can. Burton said he was amazed when he heard Depp's singing voice. I personally think Carter has her work cut out for her, playing Ms. Lovelette. I haven't seen Carter play a character that comes close as to what Ms. Lovelette is supposed to be.

I had some fears, but Mark Salisbury (link) (link), who is rather tight-knit with Burton in some regards, has high expectations, so I'm a bit consoled.

And allow me to add that that is UTTER BLASPHEMY; Charlie was a good movie T_T The Oompa Loompa scenes were bloody awesome, if I may say so.

G_G I supposed it'd turn out something like that. I love Burton's work; but Johnny Depp's just so Hollywood. The most decent role as an actor was playing Edward D Wood, jr. and there are, of course, many other pardons.

*sigh*

Mmm, while he may be the fancy of every third teen girl with the release of POTC3, and he is "Hollywood"... I still respect his acting prowess, because he pulls off such different characters so well.

But I'm no film critic, and I don't analyze and compare other actors and such... I could just be a heathen, see =p

Heh, Clockwork, I'm the same way. If I like the movie, I like the movie.

I like the new Oompa Loompas better than the old ones. *shudders and mutters about damn carrots in cover-alls...*

If I like a movie, then I like. I don't really judge who the actor is. As long as they can act and actually make the movie good, and protray the characters as they are supposed to be protrayed.

I agree with Clockwork, even though Depp is swooning, maybe not intentionally, every teenage female, he can still act. He can protray many different characters and pull them off. And his characters are never the same. Remember Secret Window? He had to play two characters in that movie and was able to pull it off.
