No there isn't. It really is just about the music.

If people who listen to goth rock are goths, what do you call somebody who listens to rap, pop or techno?

As a person who was drawn to it primarily through the fashion, art, poetry, and philosophy...and not the music...I have to say I agree.

As for music, I am a pretty loyal Muse fan, and they aren't Goth in any sense of the word. XD

If you're not a fan of goth rock, you're not a goth. Sorry. It's fairly cut and dry. But don't let that stop you from wearing your eyeliner and fishnets.

You can be a cool person in your darling little fishnet shirts and such, but I just wont be interested in how much you rave over the new Cannibal Corpse CD or how much Gerrard Way roxx your soxx.

I passed my fan-girling over pretty boys stage a looong time ago, dearie.

Like it or not, kid, the Goth label goes way beyond just the music now, if Voltaire's book is in any way correct.

I've actually found a lot of music in the Goth scene that I like, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of Siouxie and the Banshees or BauHaus specifically.

Like all my other my music, I am -very- picky about my music.

So I'm-a gonna keep calling myself Goth, because it's who I am. It took me years to figure that out, and if you don't like it then don't worry about it.

Or rather, you could introduce me to some music -you- like, and see if I might like the same thing. Might be a more productive use of conversation, imho.

Ah, -there's- the witty retort.

Why do -you- like them, then? [I'm genuinely interested, since I don't know very much about them.]

Them as in goth bands? Mainly because I enjoy the sound of the 80s and goth rock has just the right blend of synth and rock for me. That's about it. Plus, it's slightly punk.

And I'm really not trying to be witty. I just find it odd that people want to call themselves goth as if it's a justification for how cool they are. I mean really, goth isn't COOLER than metalhead or mansonite. So out of all three of those that share essentially a near exact aesthetic, do you care to call yourself goth?

You're awesome because you're you. Not because you're a goth.

None of those are accurate...I listen to all three of those, and I'm not a thug, or a teenie bopper, or a raver. Those aren't labels defined by music.

I was being silly.

I guess my dry sense of humor doesn't translate well in text.

I'm not trying to be cool, to be honest. If I wanted to be my idea of 'cool', I'd try a lot harder to be 'normal'.

Like I said, Goth for me is more a succinct definition for who I am and have always been than anything else. *cue terribly dramatic violin music*

[I'll spare you the terribly long and boring story.]

As far as the music goes, like I said before, I just recently started researching it. There are some songs and artists I really like, and some that grate on my ears like fingers on a squeaky balloon. And, what's worse, is that my taste is all over the board: Goth, Metal, Pop, Industrial, probably some classified as Emo, and even the very very occasional Rap and Country.

Anyways, any suggestions are more than welcome.
