I'm sure you're very intelligent, some people just learn better in different ways. What are you studying? And is it a smaller college or a university?

I'm taking photography, English composition, drawing, and creative writing. I don't have a major and probably never will.

It's a division of West Virginia University, but it's not very big.

The only real problem is that I can't draw. I thought I'd go to school to learn technique, but all the class is is drawing stuff and then criticizing it. I have to hang my shitty drawings for everyone to criticize and everyone else is so much better than I am, and no, I'm not just being my own worst critic. I know artists tend to berate their own work in favor of others', but I can plainly see that my drawings are shitty. Everyone else in the class has talent I've only dreamt of having.

Aside from that and money issues, I like school sort of okay. It's better than high school, though not by much.

It'll get better. I suggest making some friends so you can hang out and study together and such.

As for your drawings, yes, m'dear...you -are- berating your own work in the typical artist's way. Go by what the teacher tells you, and try and find good things in your work instead of beating yourself over percieved 'mistakes'.

And critique will help you get better, though it -is- a bit awkward at first.

Yes, that's true, but when I actually get around to drawing something, I have no idea how to utilize the suggestions I was given. I can't even shade properly or draw without outlines.

I think it just takes practice.

Starting college is a tough transition academically - you go from being spoonfed your info in small & easy amounts, to being expected to read like eight books a week. Just remember that everyone else has been thrown just as much in the deep end as you have, and try to keep up as best you can. Hang in there man, it gets funner after you get the tough part out of the way.

I've been drawing off and on for years. Practice doesn't mean much when I don't know what I'm doing.
