Yes, but we have to wait for the funny (and immensely interesting if you ask me) high-energy collisions until october.
Not that the world will go BOOM anyway when they do, that's just the media pushing it to get more readers etc.

They haven't fired any protons yet, they don't do that until October 21st, I do believe. This is basically just turning the machine on and making sure its running smoothly.
I can hear a mad scientist going "mwahahahahahaha" in the background.

I'm glad it started without any problems after all the time, effort, and money invested. The results should be interesting whatever they are. Seems to be a good time for large scale experiments, the IceCube neutrino detector is expected to be finished in the next few years too, which is by far larger than any previous neutrino detectors.

Sorry I take that back. I misread your intro thread.
The LHC hasn't been stopped.
The world isn't going to end. Even in 2012.

That originates with the Mayan calendar, though it's not supposed to be the end of the world. It just happens to be where the calendar ends. I've heard speculation that it signifies a new age or a great change, but I don't know enough about the matter to verify the truth or falsity of such claims.

They were never going to use it Saturday, they aren't going to be using it for full experiments for at least a year - they are merely testing all the systems now. It will be a while before they actually do real tests with it.

I was just thinking of Half-life last night, which is why I've decided to look out for G-man sightings in the news. But in all seriousness we already have particle accelerators that are working just fine (like for example just outside chicago), this is simply a bigger one right?
On the note of half-life here is the greatest half-life fan fiction, written by a guy who is just learning english, and turned into a machinima by another guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHxyZaZlaOs

Fermilab have the Tevatron there yeh. CERN has several of it's own already too. The LHC operates at a higher energy so it can hopefully make new discoveries. The US scrapped their next big accelerator (the Superconducting Super Collider) so the LHC will be the largest.

Thank you, Meth. That rather improved my mood.
