I hate my hair.
Having Curly hair sucks, You can't do anything to style it unless you straighten it which is a huge pain in the ass, and it ends up ruining your hair.
God I hate genetics.

I used to hate mine, I got teased so much about it at school I got a complex about it.
Now I have got a better hairdresser and I don't mind it so much. I also have some very hot hair straighteners which do the job quickly.

I cut all of my hair off yesterday, it's almost as short as my dad's now, so its easy to manage it!

No, but I don't think I'd look good with a shaved head.

True.
I naturally have an afro, which I shaved late last year, (didn't look good), so I'm growing it out, I have hair extensions so it doesn't look too bad, it is just very annoying at the moment.

Find some fun styles that complement your curls instead of trying to work against them.
Yes, you may have to actually put some products in your hair...gel, mousse, etc....but these products are usually pretty gentle, and can add a LOT to your hairstyle.
Also, be sure that you have a good cut; that can make a HUGE difference!

The proper hair cut can really make a huge difference when you have curly hair so try and find a hairstylist who knows how to work with curly hair, I'm not saying that you have to go some place pricey, just when you got to get your hair cut ask if there is someone who is good at working with curly hair.

Would you happen to have any photos of your curly hair by chance? I think you may get some better advice if folks knew what you had to deal with.
Is your hair so curly that growing it long won't weigh it down? Or does it just turn into an afro?
As others have said I think that you should look for a style that compliments it rather than trying to go against it.
