They are kinda dumb for not deducing that if every other band on his jacket is shown, then surly Sex Gang Children would also be a band.
But common sense isn't so common these days.

I have 2 DIY SGC tops and although I've had no yells in the street, workmates have taken one look and given me a questioning glance, at which point I just say " it's a band " and that's the end of it.

I tend to avoid wearing clothes that get negative attention because my parents would be angry. However, I got angry looks from various people for reading a magazine in borders that was advertising alien sex fiend in large letters on the front.

Like I said, I used to have the shirt. But they were the kind of kids who listened to Britney Spears, so I'm thinking they were just laughing about that old "Spell ICUP out loud" game.

It's because they're trying to relate the image to something they know, even if they know it probably has nothing in common to the said image of Robert Smith.
To Haunted: People will read into things the way they want to. Even though you might have a dozen different band names/bages put into your coat, and Sex Gang Children grammatically doesn't imply ganging up and having sex with children, they'll read it like that.
Maybe to avoid this, you could alter your jacket to keep it looking fantastic and removing the chances of people making misinformed judgements.
EG:
ANDI SEXGANG
&
The Sex Gang Children
That would look more prominently music related than just Sex Gang Children.
