A New Rat for OnixxFilth
I'm thinking of getting a new rat next month sometime because my last rat, Voltaire, died about a month or two ago and would like your opinion on some names. I'm thinking of getting a female this time, if possible.

I don't think so- I'm not really into sports names. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Hehe, I don't even give a rat's ass (oops, bad metaphor in this situation!) about the Packers or any other sports team!

Night Fang, I thought you were completely confused as to what gothic was. how the heck do you know that snakes are more gothic than rats?

Don't worry, Xng... this isn't really happening. You're having a nightmare.
Er, you might want to wake up now...

I'm inclined to go with Lucretia because I love that song so much. I'd like to make a suggestion though: since rats are social animals they need the company of (an)other rat(s) to maintain their mental health and happiness, so I hope you'll consider getting a pair of females instead of just one. You can pay lots and lots of attention to your little friend, but it's just not the same as having a friend of the same species to nibble on your toes while you're asleep and groom your fur for you when you don't feel up to doing the job yourself.
Shit, Xng, that's some heavy news.

"Snakes are more gothic than rats"? Since when are you the sole arbiter of what's goth and what's not? I am considering getting a pair of females, since my cage is big enough (assuming they're small rats). But then I'd have to make sure to get two different colors, so I can tell them apart. Besides, my mom won't let me have a snake- she's terrified of them.

I think getting two rats is a good idea. When I've had rodents, they did better (even lived longer) if they had a companion.
For two females, I like Carmilla and Mircalla.

Ooh, that IS clever, Tall One! The reason why I only had one rat before is that he was this HUGE male, and another rat couldn't possibly have lived comfortably in the same cage- from nose tip to tail tip, Voltaire measured about 14-17" and he was pretty fat!

Carmilla has my vote - it's pretty and easy to say. Perfect for simple folk like myself.

I'm afraid I can't take credit for the cleverness of the anagram. The names come from J. Sheridan Le Fanu's short story "Carmilla," written in 1872. Bram Stoker's "Dracula" was certainly influenced by it.
(Maybe you guys already knew that, but just in case... )
If you haven't read the story, I highly recommend it. You can find the complete story online in several places, including http://www.english.upenn.edu/~nauerbac/crml.html.
Another name used in the book is Millarca.

Oh, I knew that you didn't come up with the anagram- I just meant that it was awful clever of you to think of those two anagrams for a pair of rats. I haven't actually read the story (I do have it in a book of stories by J.S. LeFanu), but I've read enough summaries to at least get the plot down.

So, I know you're all waiting for the update. Here it goes. I got my little girls a few weeks ago- I named them Lucretia and Millarca. Lucretia has a black head and a white body with a black spot on her back. Millarca is a little bit younger than her, and is albino. I'll post pix when able.

Yeah, pet rats sounds great. Do rats require much attention from their dark overlord or can they be a relatively hands-off pet?
