I thought the same thing, maybe they were into something kinky. Could they have been using the hole to access the light or electrics at all?

I think a lot of things can creep you out if you are in a bad place mentally. I'd actually think its important you mention this to whoever you are seeing about getting help, thoughts like that can sometimes tie into being 'not quite right' which you know your not already.
