Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

The Steampunk Thread.
Because the old ones seem to have been deleted or some such, and also because I know I'm not the only one here who loves it.
Besides I have finally managed to assemble something close to a reasonable looking clothing ensemble. I am going for a combination of Spanner wielding engine room woman/ sky pirate / lady explorer . Like so -
]
Father took this one which is why my face looks even fatter than normal. He is so shit at taking my picture nicely.
I was in an excitable rush so there are no accessories to be seen ( unless you count the hair braids containing god knows how many beads, not to mention steel washers, little steel nuts and a lot of copper wire) I need to finish my gun and make holsters for my huuuge spanners....And I need a jacket of some sort. I'll be wearing this combo at the Steampunk meetup in Whitby
So basically I invite you little buggers to post all your Steampunkish and related whatsits in here Yeeeees?

I plan on going steampunk sky pirate/captain for Halloween. Not that I really need to use Halloween to wear it, my mom will be more likely to allow me out of the house then. I plan on making goggles, a coat and a pirate shirt and wear pants tucked into my button up boots. Very, very slightly inspired by Treasure Planet and several other things (I watched Stardust and excalimed several times that "that would be perfect for my sky pirate outfit!"), and I've wanted to do it for years, but in order to make the coat up to my standards and be able to wear it often, I'd need around $100-$150.
I plan to post pictures in the different stages of finishing things, as I only have the boots as of this moment :P. This is why I'm going to try and apply at one of the local craft stores.

At first I was iffy on the whole steampunk thing.
Now, I've got a couple outfits and mix match into the brassy goodness...
I'll get pics up soon I can. I have a new vest I found that is working towards the goal of making an outfit inspired by both steampunk and the boy on the right of this picture: http://fc05.devi antart.com/fs25/f/2008/093/7/a/Mois_by_AmoriDais.jpg
splice the url back together..

I have some steampunkish pseudo-corsets and a white tunic and some other things I could piece together into a decent outfit (pics later, maybe,) but I have no brass things, not even gold or any sort of accessory that is remotely steampunk.
I love steampunk though, calls to mind movies like Treasure Planet (I loved this movie years ago) and A Series of Unfortunate events, kind of. Also it appeals to my obsession with Victorian things (my room is full of Victorian era, as in actually over a hundred years old not just replica, furniture.)

It's always nice to see some steampunk enthusiasm among Gnetters.
I have an outfit that I wear... not full-fledged steampunk, but I still like it.
(old picture from last October)

Alas, I have no friends to take pictures of me, so I'll explain that the outfit consists of: a corsetted trench coat, strappy boots, brass goggles, and a faux leather newsboy cap.
I'm also going to be building a new outfit soon, this time in actual sepia tone (much to the relief of my friends and family, no doubt, who haven't seen my in color in years).

I love thrift stores. Today I was after a vest, which decided not to get, at least not right now, when I found this brown two-piece suit, but the jacket and trousers are done in a very military style, with four pockets on the jacket, wide collar and shoulder 'epilets'. I'm thinking I'll replace the buttons on the jacket with something brass (right now they are the typical brown plastic ones); but combined with a couple other items I already had for my 'steampunk' outfit, it looks great! I like it with both my old 40's Willson welding goggles and my brass late-Edwardian sunglasses.
Now I need a hat. ^.^

So, I've been idly thinking about making something for something, and steampunk seems an interesting direction (my pirate outfit is complete enough that I can do several variants). I was wondering if there's a core premise to it beyond vaguely-western-sci-fi-ishness. Can anyone suggest any films or sources to refer? Or is it kind of a brass-and-boiler free-for-all?

As much as I hate to reply to myself, I feel I should clarify - what do /you/ guys think of regarding steampunk?
Ugh, I feel like I haven't made myself clear at all, and I can't figure out how to edit my previous post. Bah, forgive the ramblings.

The steampunk thing is pretty neat, but I don't pull it off well. I want a pair of round sunglasses so bad though but haven't been able to find any.
