Pointy Ears

I found this interesting article this morning.
I knew that plenty of people wanted pointy ears, but
I didn't know there was a good surgical procedure for this now.
That looks cute and mythical.

I heard a nasty opinion on some website about this surgery, it went like this;

"This surgery is totally bogus unless they can point your eyebrows too.
Remember how lame it was for the first two years when T'Pol didn't have pointy eyebrows?"

That's been around for quite some time, really. Some red-head who got it done was linked on Fark the other day.

I wouldn't personally have that done myself. A small but significant part of the reason is because i see the little "pocket" that is formed inside the tip and I start wondering how the heck I'd get at it to itch/clean/have people lick.

o_O

I'm sure it won't be too long before someone figures out a way to elongate, instead of just point. If I could get Poison Elves' style ears, I probably would.

the webpage says that some musicians have had the surgery, but it is reticent as to which ones. I'm kind of suspicious.

hmm... ....well, i thought pointy ears was cute when i was little and obsessed with fairies, but seriously, surgery, i find that a bit disturbing, but that's my opinion.

I noticed that too.
I'd love to get it now, but I know that I'd hate it later on. Same reason I'm not getting a tattoo until it represents something (rather than just getting it for the sake of just having one)

I sensed bullshit from the outset, and after some investigation, came up with this.

I didn't say I believed in it 100%, I just thought it was cool.

Yeah, I'd again call BS on that particular site.

Off the top of my head, this is the first reputable link I could find. Note that there's a large difference between a "fresh" picture and the fully healed one; not nearly as goblin-ish, and I'd imagine that the overal procedure causes the ear to point to the sides slightly more than previously.

And not to play Devil's Advocate here, Signe, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that would consider the average appearance of people on here disturbing. That doesn't make it any less or more correct. There's a large difference between not caring for someone's appearance and calling it disturbing or mentally ill like some do.

This isn't even the most extreme thing that I've seen. In fact, most of the people that get this done are downright normal compared to other people into tattos/body mods/etc. For the majority of ones that I've seen, the people that have their ears pointed end to only have that done. It's a specific choice and generally not done lightly; I think you'd also be hard-pressed to find a competent individual willing to do this without some kind of waiting period/advance notice/later date for the actual procedure being done. It's not an "off the street" activity.

Here is perhaps one of the better people to have this done by, Howie from LunaCobra. The link is an image gallery of healed ear pointing.

Cosmetic surgery is the height of vanity and self-indulgence. Jeez, if you got money to burn, do something useful with it.

Did you have him listen to the part of The USS Make Sh*t Up (by voltaire) that talks about Klingons? If that doesn't work lets just get back to work on nanoprobes and we'll assimilate him.

These things are cheaper than a tattoo. It's not "I raised money for breast implants" cost, it's "I decided not to go to that concert" cost. My (albiet overpriced for the day) leather jacket I got back in HS (and still wear near-daily now) cost about the same as it does to get these done.

Some people collect CDs, others like shoes or a favorite soda; this is "disposable income" level we're talking about.

If these things cost thousands then I would agree with you. Truth be told it's probably harder for a tatto/piercing studio to get licensed for this (some states would require a CNA license) than the actual process is. Prices vary (based on the person doing it and on yourself), but $75-$300 per ear is the range I've heard.

On a related note, I probably wouldn't trust a plastic surgeon to do this over a competent body-mod studio. Either way you're going to have to travel to find the right person, and the only benefit to the surgeon is that they can prescibe proactive antibiotics. This is a dubious benefit. What it boils down to is that plastic surgeons are very expierenced at making "non standard" appear "standard" and the like; stuff like this is right out of thier expertise.

Piercing/Tatoo parlours do this. My friend is booked in for the end of this year to get it done.

You slice off around 5mm of the top of your ear, then curl it round and sew it to the other side of your ear.

Not hard but I could imagine it would be quite painful and hard to keep uninfected.

I wonder if someone with a similar birth defect a long time ago is the source of the whole elf legend...

possibly, her ears are actually a bit cooler than the ones that have been pointed because they don't actually have the bit that folds over, the top of her ears are just flat, slightly rounded points
