How old were you when you became goth?

Just wondering how old everyone was when they got into the goth subculture, and how they see their old selves now.

For me, it was when I was around 14, and got into the whole dressing black thing. I remember buying a few long coats here and there, but I only really got into the music and literature when I was around 16(ish). Looking back now, I'm happy that I was who I was because without that, I wouldn't be the same person that I am today.

How about you guys?

I was called a goth when I was 13, but I didn't know what they were saying and still argue this is bullsh*t.

During the eighties I admired goth subculture from afar but really didn't get into the dress. I was more into New Wave as far as aesthetics go (if I have to be labeled), but I always loved goth music, and so a few decades later I finally became brave enough to dive headlong into it. I was 49.

I'm a bit of everything. Loved the cure when they first came out 30+ years ago, never really knew of them as being goth, or knowing there was a goth culture, until i got on the internet.

love the clothes, the hair, the outfits, some of the music, but if you met me on the street (depending on my clothes), you'd never know and that is mostly because my other beliefs keep my clothing limited (as I'm moving into hemp clothing due to the ecofriendly, fairtrade, ethical production methods).

I was 16 in 1981 and living in Australia which was then a good decade behind the rest of the world in terms of art and culture. During the late 70s I somehow discovered the work of two British fantasy illustrators Rodney Matthews and Patrick Woodroffe and through them the swords and sorcery novels of Michael Moorcock - all three of these gentlemen were precursors of what became the goth aesthetic. With the discovery of the works of Swiss surrealist painter HR Giger (the late and great) I was well on my way to Gothdom.
But I had always been a somewhat serious, mature and spooky child, obsessed with ancient Egypt, archaeology and history. When all my peers were still playing tag I was in the school library reading about the unwrapping of Tutankhamun's mummy. i also went through a long period where I was secretly obsessed with the occult to the point where I tried to conjour demons. (I'm now an atheist btw) So I guess I'e always been goth. The black clothes and chunky silver rings came later as did my love of poetry and Shakespeare.

I was born on New Years Eve, there was a full moon.
My Mother suffered terribly, almost died ..
And I was named after a ship .. that sank o.O

So, kinda consider myself to have been 'born Gothic'?

The Lusitania, she was torpedoed by a German U-boat (allegedly) ..
Some believe she was actually deliberately sunk by the British.
Anywaaay, her wreck is just off the coast of Cork.
That's the area my Mother's family originates from.

I've always been darkly inclined, but I never considered myself to be goth until 18. Before then I was more of a metal kid.

It started a few years ago in 8th grade. But I was a COMPLETE babybat. I dressed in all black and had quite the attitude! I'm just now getting into the actual subculture.

Goth is is like clown painting. It sits there smiling, looking entertaining, then think it wants to kill you.

Ever since I was 5ish our family friends would call me Wednesday. Everyone kept calling me goth so I just accepted it (I didn't even know what it was for the longest time!)

So is that a self fulfilling prophecy or neural linguistic programming?

I was listening to goth music in high school, but I did not know it was goth. I defiantly did not dress goth.
Then I tried very hard to be normal sort of failed because dark trench coats are not all that normal in preppy land.
then I just got into goth only to find that allot was familiar already.

I suppose I was always more "gothic" on the inside than on the outside, even from a very early age, but when I was about 14 is when I really started to develop a particularly gothic character. Now, as of late I've also been developing my "outside" in order to match my inside(s), as I've been feeling the need for these two sides to relate more, while before I paid little to no attention to things like physical looks, body language, conversation tone, and so on.
