Star Trek's 45th Anniversary

As we approach September 9th, 2011, which is the 45th anniversary of the premier of the first Star Trek television episode "Man Trap", I thought I'd post a few fun things here to celebrate this landmark cultural institution.

First up, here's a couple of interviews with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy from 1966 where they discuss what this new show will be all about. I'd never seen these before, and if I do say so, they're highly "fascinating"!

Star Trek - Shatner and Nimoy " 1966 Interviews"

Good stuff!

Also, no observation of this milestone would be complete without a nod to Bjo Trimble, the woman who SAVED the show from being a forgotten footnote in TV history. If it weren't for Bjo Trimble and her end-of-second-season letter writing campaign, Star Trek would have been canceled after 2 seasons ... and none of the rest of it would have happened!

Because a show with only 2 seasons in those days did not get sold in syndication, and it was because of college students watching the show every afternoon in syndication that the animated series got made, and then the first movie ... and so on.

Here's a great article:

Bjo Trimble: The Woman Who Saved Star Trek

What she accomplished, especially at that time, really was amazing.

(Of course, there could be another article about the letter-writing campaign by some of science-fiction's brightest authors that helped get the show renewed after season one.)

And here's my last post for the moment. Back in 1966 there were no DVD's or even VCR's. People didn't sell pilots or television series to advertisers by showing them video in those days; they printed booklets or "sell sheets" that got distributed to advertisers to build excitement about the shows.

Somebody has posted the initial Star Trek Pilot Sell Sheet from 1966 online, and it's terrific to look at. You can even see some of the cast from the pilot that didn't make it into the series.

Just click on the images to view them larger.

I'll post more 45th anniversary goodness soon. If anyone else has something they can contribute, feel free to add it here!

Actually, I just realized I made a mistake. The actual 45th anniversary is tomorrow, September 8th.

Celebrating 45 years of Star Trek: The cast talks about their memories of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry.

What's your most enduring Gene Roddenberry anecdote?
