Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL.

Help needed with fantasy goth compilation

A friend of mine asked me to make a compilation of fantasy-orientated goth music for her, and frankly, I'm at a loss. This, in my experience, is more in the realms of metal bands like Man-o-War and Blind Guardian.

Now I sit with the dilemma, where do I find goth songs about elves, faeries wizards and warriors, if they do exist?

Also, I'm not talking about Nightwish's Elven Path or other songs by them either, since they're technically not goth, and my friend doesn't really like Tarja's voice.

All I have discovered in my collection so far is Inkubus Sukkubus's "Away with the Faeries".

Any suggestions? It would be much appreciated.

Elane. It's dark folk (darkwave folk music project), but they label themselves 'dark fantasy folk'.

The song Deliverance by The Mission (U.K.) uses heavy Camelot imagery and is true Goth Rock.
Believe in magic; believe in lore, legend and myth
And the hand that guides in the cunning of hope, in the weaving of dreams
And the lady of the lake takes my hand and leads me
To the holy isle and the faerie rings and the circles of stone
Forever and again

The Shroud uses a lot of mystic imagery in their songs, might check them out. Also Goth Rock.

And she isn't goth, or a darkwave project, however the tone and lyrics of her music is considerably darker. Folk/world singer Loreena McKennitt has a dark edge to her music and often plays on mystic themes. Not the mention she has more talent in her fore finger than most other artist out there.

Dream pop/Ethereal goth rock group Autumn's Grey Solace also uses some imagery that she might like.

And add Unto Ashes to that list. Pagan-influenced, dark folk.

*Slaps himself on the forehead*

Of course! How could I pass over what is probably my favorite Mission song of all time!? (Stupidstupidstupid me). Probably one of the greatest experiences I've had was seeing them live onstage. Once the song ended, we carried on with the chorus for about 6 minutes before Wayne Hussey told us to shut up so they could carry on with their next song

Anyway, thanks for pointing out what should have been very obvious to me. Also, I'll take a look at your other recommendations asap.

Well, my turn for the obvious. Miss Emilie Autumn has an entire album of the faerie-fantasy called 'Enchant'. It's much lighter than her newer Victorian industrial albums.

Good luck and enjoy!

Fields of the Nephalim has a hand full of songs that might be a bit more fantasy geared. But it depends mainly on if you're well versed in obscure fantasy or occult.

Cruxshadows. A SHITLOAD of their songs are based on myths and legends.

Thanks for the help so far. Sadly, the only Cruxshadows album I own is "Wishfire", and there aren't really any songs on there that would really fit in this compilation.

Ok, songs I have lined up so far:

* Deliverance - The Mission UK
* Rapunzel - Emilie Autumn
* Fairyland - Angelzoom
* Swords to Ground - Vespertina
* Away with the Faeries - Inkubus Sukkubus
* Queen of Swords - Die Laughing (For now anyway, since it doesn't really fit the criteria)
* A Tale of Fate - Hagalaz' Runedance
* Faith - The New Creatures
* Ghosts Of The Forest - Impressions of Winter
* Witches' Rune - Unto Ashes

I'll need a few more to complete the compilation.

As far as the Cruxshadows go...yeah, Wishfire doesn't have a lot of myth-themed songs. Look up some of their other albums, though: Telemetry of a Fallen Angel has the songs Monsters, Jackal Head, and Hanged Man (a reference to the tarot card; it counts, sort of?). The Ethernaut and Dreamcypher albums have tons of references to Greek mythology, too.

Mmm...let's see. I don't really know many fantasy-themed goth rock/darkwave/industrial songs. There are a lot of metal bands that have done songs based on fantasy novels and characters, though--look up bands like Blind Guardian, Lake of Tears, Pyramaze, and DUNGEON. While it's more an experimental symphonic group than anything, Dargaard not only took their name from a fortress in the DragonLance series of books, but did a few songs based on characters and themes from those books (Takhisis Dance is a very dark, atmospheric piece).

Seconded!! I also second DepthsofSpace's recommendation of Loreena McKennitt.

Also try:

[x] Ophelia's Dream
[x] Dargaard
[x] Nox Arcana [specifically the albums "Grimm Tales" and "Winter's Knight"]
[x] Leaves' Eyes
[x] Dark Sanctuary *

* I don't recall lyrics about elves, faeries, mermaids, etc.; they are a French Ethereal wave/Gothic Neo-classical band -- mostly instrumental -- but might also have the desired sound you are looking for. Worth a listen!!

Hope this helped!

Miranda Sex Garden (will it be sensored?) has a song called "Fairytales of Slavery". It's good; I was fascinated by it for years after I downloaded it by accident from Limewire.
